Some types of brain damage cannot be recovered from, but others are remarkably recoverable. If a person has a stroke, and the brain cells are damaged and die, there will be no healing, but if the cells do not die, they can repair themselves, especially with medical intervention and physical therapy. What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback, is a system of training the brain to function more efficiently. It involves a system of rewards when the brain changes its activity to more appropriate patterns. The brain’s actions are measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG), and the client learns to self-regulate his or her own brain function.  The technician applies electrodes to the scalp that can monitor brain wave activity. Through the use of an integrated computer, the brain wave frequencies are monitored. Some are desirable, others less so, and the client learns to control his or her brain wave frequencies for better “brain health.” READ MORE

The effects of addiction on brain function…and of brain function on addiction

The hallmarks of addiction and its influence on the brain are threefold: craving for the object of addiction, loss of control over the use of that object, and continuing use despite negative consequences. The term “addiction” was for a long time applied only to substances, such as alcohol and addictive drugs, but more recent research has shown that the term “addiction” is legitimately applicable, and not just in a loose, slangy way, to such pleasurable activities as gambling, shopping, and sex. Nutritional supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids are one nutritional supplement that has been proven effective in helping heal the brain. Grape seed extract has been shown to support the structural integrity of brain cells and brain cell networks. A brain that has been damaged, whether by natural aging or by a stroke, by substance abuse, or by other causes may be helped significantly through the use of this natural substance. In fact, recent scientific studies suggest that grape seed extract may actually stimulate the production of new brain cells.  Read More
